The Bowen Technique is a soft remedial tissue therapy working over the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body. It treats the body holistically and a therapist will work on various parts of the body during a treatment, not always just the area associated with discomfort.
The treatment is safe and gentle enough to be used on babies and the elderly and non-intrusive as it can be performed through light clothing. The moves are small, rolling moves over certain parts of the body. Bowen must not be confused with massage; the moves are very different with a much lighter pressure.
A particular feature of Bowen is that the therapist takes shorts breaks of two minutes and leaves the room between various sets of moves, allowing the brain to take stock of what has just taken place in the body and respond as appropriate.
Many conditions benefit from Bowen, the most notable being back pain with just perhaps two to three treatments required. Shoulder problems also respond very well to Bowen, as do migraines, ankle pain, tennis elbow and neck pain. A wide variety of sports injuries can be treated and many sportsmen are turning to Bowen, not just for treatmet of an injury, but also as a preventative measure and often find an increase in performance after receiving regular treatments.
However, it's not just muscular and joint pain that benefit. Those suffering with asthma and hayfever can find tremendous relief from Bowen. Bowen also works at a systemic level too, balancing the body and bringing improvement from digestive disorders, such as IBS, giving a boost to the immune system and balancing the reproductive system (for both men and women) thereby helping issues such as PMS and fertility.
